Between endless touring around the country and penning punk rock songs by the dozen, you’d think Canberra four-piece Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers would have no time to dig into their feels for the occasional ballad. Luckily, however, it seems the band are supreme multi-taskers, today releasing their most personal single to date, ‘Never Saw It Coming’.
Penned by drummer Neve van Boxsel, the new single consists of a simple acoustic guitar with Boxsel’s emotive vocals as she sings about persevering through hardship while having your mates by your side. It’s a pretty devastating song, with lines like “In seven years / I’ll be okay / cause that’s when my cells will regenerate” absolutely tugging on the heartstrings.
The accompanying visuals are just as poignant, a mix of BTS footage from the band’s time on tour intersected with close ups of Neve as she portrays her inner struggle. It’s a hard-hitting change of gears from the band who rose to prominence writing fiery headbangers, but a welcome one that shows their musical growth throughout the years.
Along with the new single, the band have today announcing their debut album, I Love You, which is slated to land on September 8th. Featuring their punk rock roots along with laid back love songs like ‘Salt’ ft. The Grogans and the title track, the new project is a total time capsule of Teen Jesus’ rise over the last couple of years, all the while teasing what lies ahead for the Canberra outfit.
