Despite being wildly problematic and the very definition of politically incorrect, Robert Downey’s portrayal of Sergeant Lincoln Osiris and consequently, Kirk Lazarus, in 2008’s Tropic Thunder has achieved something of a cult status in cinematic history. Praised for the absolute ridiculousness of his performance and the sheer humour he brought to the film, RDJ very well could retire now, 15 years later, and still have Tropic Thunder be at the top of his filmography.
There is one thing, however, that we totally didn’t realise about RDJ’s performance until super recently. Specifically, the part in the film where he said that he doesn’t drop character until the DVD commentary. It was a hilarious line and was very in character for the insane method actor he was playing, but it seems he went a step further in his portrayal, embracing the meta theatrical and, in fact, not dropping character until the end of the Tropic Thunder commentary.
What makes it even funnier is that his castmates Ben Stiller and Jack Black are completely their normal selves on the two hour commentary, all the while RDJ is basking in his comedic excellence for the world to see. It’s a must-watch for any fan of the film and the former Avengers head honcho, and we’re just spewing that it took us this long to find it. Check it out in full below:
