As summer continues to kick in full swing and the days become hotter and drier, the quest for sunshine-infused tunes to soundtrack weekly beach trips is still in full force. Now, New Zealand’s finest, Muroki and BENEE, have teamed up for a collaboration that fits the brief and then some. Titled ‘Love Cocoon,’ the new track is a hazy blend of psychedelic melodies and indulgent vocals from the two Kiwi talents, and has quickly become one of our favourite songs of the summer.
Muroki takes the lead on the single, opening things up with heartfelt lyrics atop an R&B-infused soundscape, as he showcases his signature mix of singing and rapping. He also utilises tasteful rhythmic variations that hit the sweet spot, emphasizing phrases like “Each and every time/I remember I’m fine,” as the accompanying guitar and drum beats follow suit. BENEE’s verse perfectly complements Muroki’s as well, with the ‘Soaked’ singer adding an airy counterpoint to Muroki’s husky tone. Together, they create a harmonious blend that listens like a sonic love cocoon in itself.
Reflecting on how the collaboration came about and its meaning, Muroki shares, “All these influences were just saying one thing to me, and I thought, why not go straight to the source and get BENEE to jump on this track? We sing two sides of a tale about someone utterly besotted with their partner, and I love what we got here.”
This collaboration is a promising offering from the two Kiwi stars, and fortunately, it’s now available in its entirety. Listen to “Love Cocoon” above and make sure to buy/stream it here.
