“Every Breaking Wave” the official music video for U2’s latest single dramatizes the wave of violence that swept Northern Ireland in the Eighties.

Aoife McArdle a Belfast-born filmmaker made the clip using footage from her 13-minute short film of same name, Every Breaking Wave.

From crowd-surfing at a punk show to running through the woods and diving into swimming pools, a skinhead teen and young woman’s romance grows. The story follows two teenagers, one Catholic and the other Protestant, who fall in love amidst ongoing violence. The clip is set to convey how bad blood between different groups in society could not slow the affection between two lovers who fight to overcome stereotypes in the midst of civil unsteadiness.
