Nike’s Forgotten Glory Child: The Air Max 96 Is Finally Making A Return, With A Twist
So ugly that it's just great.

It’s no secret that Nike’s more alien Air Max models have been hugely hyped in the past few seasons: The 95, 97, 98 and TN have all received the retro treatment countless times over the years, giving older sneaker aficionados a chance to relive the glory days while younger fans have latched onto another chance to cop the classics.

While many consider 1995-1999 to be the glory years for Nike’s Air Max design, one sneaker has been largely left out of discussion: The Air Max 96. With it’s obnoxious colourblocking and offensive design, it’s no secret that the 96 might be one of the ugliest Air Max models – but if the popularity of Raf Simons and Adidas’ collaboration and high-fashion generally is anything to go by, then ugly is definitely in.

Slowly, but surely, the calls for the 96 to return have been growing in volume from Air Max enthusiasts. I made one of them here on LWA and another in this interview with Sneaker Freaker – and now our prayers have finally been answered! According to Sneaker Freaker’s Facebook page, the 96 is finally receiving a retro after a whole two decade hiatus since its glaring debut.

Seeing as 2016 is the 20 year anniversary of the Air Max 96, it’s no surprise that Nike have chosen to resurrect the 96 now – although there’s a twist. The sole and air units have been updated to mirror what we’ve seen on recent iterations of the Ultra Jacquard Air Max 95 – and although the bubbles have been slimmed and streamlined, we’re sure that many people will be happy for the 96’s return full stop.

All we have so far is this image from the lads over at Sneaker Freaker so far, but we’re expecting more information soon:
