Adam Sandler has shared some of his ideas for a possible sequel to his 1996 comedy film, Happy Gilmore. Speaking to Variety earlier this week, the actor revealed that he’d be interested in reprising his role as a bad-tempered golfer, and suggested that the sequel follow the titular protagonist in the latter years of his sporting career.
“Wouldn’t that be fun to do the senior tour of Happy Gilmore?” Sandler asked, “and hang out with all those guys and try to write a great script about Happy as an older guy, and having to calm down his temper and all that stuff?”. The comedian went on to explain that although there’s no set plan for a Happy Gilmore sequel, he isn’t ruling out the possibility of some sort of reboot. “I never know,” Sandler said, “Maybe one day, something like that.”

Elsewhere in the same interview, Sandler spoke of the possible return of fellow sports comedy film The Waterboy, remarking that he’d like to reunite with his then-costar Henry Winkler. “That would be fun as hell,” Sandler said of a possible The Waterboy reprisal, “I love Henry Winkler, he’s always gonna be Coach Klein to me… I don’t know what the ideas [would be].”
Sandler’s reboot ideas arose while he was promoting the sequel to his crime-comedy Netflix film, Murdery Mystery 2, which again stars Sandler alongside Jennifer Aniston, and is expected to hit screens next year. Meanwhile, earlier this year, comedy director Judd Apatow likewise revealed plans for a sequel to his beloved film Superbad, similarly expressing interest in following the main characters in their senior years.
