Just the other day my housemate asked me if I had searched Instagram through hashtag emojis. What seemed like a simple question, I realised was an entire lexicon of social media and technology driven BS, and those on the outside of it must have not a clue what any of us are talking about. Luckily, this week over 1,700 entries were added to the Merriam-Webster’s unabridged online dictionary that gives significance to the ever-evolving English language – driven, largely, by random information on the internet.

The acronyms NSFW, WTF, along with emoji, clickbait and meme were amongst the new entries, Along with the new words, context will also be provided with the implementation of 3,200 examples of correct use. With social media’s importance and tech-driven colloquialism unlikely to diminish any time soon, expect to see many more internet expressions making their way into the dictionary. To check out more of the new additions, head over to Merriam-Webster.
