We had the pleasure of interviewing and shooting the Brooklyn-based, absolutely babein’ actress Taylor LaShae. It’s evident she has a lot to say, with our conversation spanning horror films, astro-physics and vegemite. Plus, her beauty is absolutely effortless. Here’s how it went down:

While I was shooting you I was immediately reminded by Anna Karina’s ‘Roller Girl’ video, not knowing she was one of your favourite actresses! How has she influenced you?

First of all, thank you so much for the best compliment ever! She is absolutely magic and has influenced me so much during the last few years. When I first watched Jean-luc Goddard film, she was the star. And well, she was an absolute STAR! Her facial expressions were mesmerising, and being an actress myself I wish to have such charisma.

I would watch her… really watch her film after film and loved her movements and her style. Conservative, yet subtly sexy. I loved it. It won me over. This era, this hair, this ‘air’ she gives off is just what I want to embellish in my life and have ever since.

What was the funnest audition you’ve had? I see you the audition where you had to take a bunch of selfies.

Every audition is fun in it’s own way. Your heart races a million beats per second while your mind is in character, and you’re hoping to God you remember the lines! It’s a very fun, exhilarating process. Getting a callback is more exciting then when your takeout guy buzzes you at the door. The most fun I’ve had on an audition was for a horror film I got cast in. It was a twice a week audition process for two months… Judging us on our best horror screams. Getting up on stage in front a full room of casting directors, being devastatingly in tears because my “best friends would get murdered left and right.”

It is not as dark as it seems when an actor lies on the ground motionless as you pretend they meant the world to you, but in reality they’re just napping. It was fun getting to know everyone, getting scared, and screaming like 12 year old girls going to the mall on the weekends made it very nostalgic and 90’s slasher driven. So fun when I think about it.

You mentioned to me you grew up surrounded by rockets and space, if you were to be an astro-physicist, what would you be most interested in researching?

Yes, I grew up right next to NASA and the out of body experience you get when you just look up in a night sky has always been a big part of my life. If I were to be a astro-physicist in an alternate universe, I would first pat myself on the back for going through the years of school for math! I would want to specialise in Cosmic Microwave Background. The cosmic web (that black stuff you see that registers in your mind as “nothingness”) and what it is because that nothingness is holding us together as a universe, as a galaxy, as a solar system. The mechanics in its own are so fascinating and I wonder what this “dark matter” is. You know that there is no actual chemical compound for dark matter… and that scientists call it that because they don’t even know what else to call it. It is unknown yet it is there. Beyond boggles my mind among thousands, and c’mon, black holes? One of the most mind-alterating things to even comprehend. They are such inter-stellar phenomenons in themselves that not one single person in our universe will ever be able to find out what comes out the other side. I could go on for days…

Do you have an overarching goal for acting?

You know, I think about this daily. I want to just be a good actress. Play roles that open up myself and finding out who I am. I don’t mean in a literal way but when you live your life in someone else’s shoes… your eyes open to so much possibilities and you become more worldly and compassionate.

Yes, I would love to be in a movie with Michael Cain directed by Martin Scorsese. Yes, I would love to be in a record breaking award winning TV that everyone won’t stop Buzzfeed-ing about but in all honesty, I want to act. I want to play amazing roles. I want to break through my mind and learn from it all.

Life in Texas (where you call home) vs. NYC?

Both home in my eyes. Houston, where I was born and raised, is like home base. I go back when it’s Christmas time and when its time to be with family. It’s so nice to come back when I need a break from the city. Now, the city on the other hand is a place I couldn’t imagine being apart from. A place where I can be 4 steps ahead of the game and still be 20 steps behind. I love this city. It makes me expand my capabilities and reach higher for them!

I love NYC because the people who live here are all here for a reason. No one is like “I’m going to move to New York and chill, have fun and do whatever” When you move here, you have a mind set with a grocery list of goals and ways to succeed. It’s addicting and never ending. What a wonderful place to be this time of age.

Any plans on visiting Australia? We’re based here!

Only in my dreams! I wish to plan on somehow getting out there soon, and when I do I will come say hi and we can eat veggie-mite or however you spell it.

Have you been getting into kickboxing? Wanna match me?

Bring it girl! You have NO idea! I signed up for kickboxing to further my skills on my resume, and it has become an amazing/exhausting hobby. It is so great and it kicks my ass! I’m tired three seconds after I start but won’t stop till I feel the sweat dropping from my nose. Gross, I know. Learning self defense and also shedding pounds and having fun? Sign me up.

Would you ever go back to long hair or has short hair become your identity?

Short hair has definitely become a sort of identity for me and if I could ever make it through that awful in between stage, I don’t see why I wouldn’t grow it out again. But then, I would fight the (need for change) I get every month or two and chop it back off! Short hair for life!

Has your perception of the acting industry in NY since you’ve been involved, and if so, how?

Not so much that I know of actually. I see a lot of non-talented people and then a ton of extremely talented people who get cast in popular series and movies. I have not learned anything while living in New York, if I can answer this by saying I have even begun to figure out the acting industry. It is not meant to be got.

Describe the dream character you would like to play?

In a dream world, the character has already been made and played. I would love to be Audrey in Twin Peaks. Her character is EVERYTHING! I kick myself everyday knowing I didn’t audition for her role in the remakes. Don’t even remind me about it.

I love the music we played at the shoot – track names please!
