The director said a reboot wouldn’t tarnish the original…

Director Judd Apatow has revealed his proposed, and ultimately rejected, idea for a Superbad sequel. During a podcast appearance, Apatow- who co-produced the 2007 comedy with a script from Seth Rogen- said he’d always had plans to reunite the film’s high school duo, played by Michael Cera and Jonah Hill.

“I always wanted them to do a sequel to Superbad…I know that Jonah said ‘Oh it’ll be funny to do it when we’re 70 or 80,’ but I really wanted them to do a Superbad in college where Jonah flunks out of college and just shows up and visits Michael Cera,” Apatow said.

The sequel details come ahead of Superbad’s 15th anniversary this year, and follow comments made by some of the film’s stars about their openness to a potential reboot. While Emma Stone has stated her eagerness to reprise her role as Hill’s love interest, Rogen – who also made a cameo appearance – said he doesn’t “think [Superbad] requires improvement or anything to be built upon it.”

Speaking of the reservations, Apatow claimed that a Superbad 2 wouldn’t tarnish the enduring appeal of the original. “That’s like saying ‘don’t make the second episode of The Sopranos.’ Like, so why do you think we would screw up the second one?” Apatow said.
