In an unexpected turn of cinematic events, Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy found themselves at the cente 3of a total cinematic shit storm in 2023, with the simultaneous release of their blockbuster hits, Barbie and Oppenheimer, on July 21st. Rather than competing for audiences during a period of sluggish box office receipts, the two movies unexpectedly boosted each other, giving rise to the global sensation now known as Barbenheimer.

On the surface, the films appear worlds apart. Margot Robbie’s Barbie, tells the tale of the iconic doll’s transformative journey from plastic to personhood, while Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer is a biographical exploration of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the architect of the atomic bomb. Despite their obvious differences, both movies enjoyed rave reviews. Not to mention, they both absolutely killed it at the box office, with Barbie grossing over $1.4 billion worldwide and Oppenheimer crossing the $950 million mark. Together, the films proved that the communal experience of theatre-going could still thrive in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

So, when Margot Robbie, adorned in a Barbie-inspired pink outfit, sat down with the darkly clad Cillian Murphy for an Actors on Actors conversation, they delved into the unexpected success of their films. Hilariously, Murphy acknowledged his newfound understanding of memes, all the while Robbie spilled the beans on some of the behind the scenes shenanigans that went down prior to the films’ releases.
