The comedian also explained the origins of the beloved ogre’s accent…

Mike Myers has intensified rumours of a Shrek revival after revealing that he’d happily voice the ogre every year. In an interview with GQ, the comedian said the swamp-dweller is one of his favourite characters within his storied career, before admitting that “”if [he]had to do one Shrek a year, [he’d] be thrilled.”

“I love playing Shrek…There’s an emotional centre there. The concept of going from a self-loathing ogre to a self-accepting ogre was meaningful to me,” Myers recalled. Since first premiering in 2001, the Dreamworks franchise- which co stars Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz- has become one of the highest-grossing animations in history, culminating in the 2010 finale Shrek Forever After.

Meyers comments add to growing rumours of a Shrek comeback. In 2017, screenwriter Michael McCullers revealed that a fifth instalment of the film is in the works, assuring fans that “it’s got a pretty big reinvention behind it.” Just this month, Meyers reprised his role as Shrek in his new Netflix show, The Pentaverate, which features a cameo of the ogre in its third episode.

Elsewhere in the interview, Meyers revealed that Shrek wasn’t always intended to be Scottish, but morphed into the accent once he worked in the recording booth. “When I was approached to do Shrek I originally did it as a Canadian and then I re-recorded it as Scottish because that seemed to be the most working class [accent],” Myers said.
