With self-isolation and social distancing on the rise, services such as Netflix and YouTube have seen a huge increase in streaming. So much so that they now run the risk of crashing due to the insane amount of traffic they’re getting. The EU has now asked providers such as Broadband and BT to limit services to ensure that doesn’t happen, but providers insist that they can keep up with the increase in traffic.
However, Netflix has admitted that the huge increase in streaming could cause problems, but have emphasised that it has measures in place to deal with it.
“Commissioner Breton is right to highlight the importance of ensuring that the internet continues to run smoothly during this critical time,” said a Netflix spokesperson. “We’ve been focused on network efficiency for many years, including providing our open connect service for free to telecommunications companies.”
Imagine if streaming services like Netflix and YouTube were to crash over the next couple weeks, it would be the epitome of bad news for anyone in quarantine or who’s practising social distancing at the moment. Fingers crossed that never happens…
