If you haven’t caught the trailer for Robert Egger’s vengeful third film, The Northman, stop what you’re doing and watch it below right now. The film follows the writer-director’s terrifying debut The Witch and haunting psychological horror The Lighthouse, and sees him set his sights on the viking genre, with one of the most stacked casts you’ll see in any film this year.
The synopsis reads like a classic revenge piece – young Prince Amleth (Oscar Novak) witnesses the murder of his father (Ethan Hawke) and the kidnapping of his mother (Nicole Kidman), fleeing his island home and vowing to one day return and take back what is his. Fast forward two decades later and Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård), now a viking berserker, returns tow Iceland on a slave ship to honour his vow with the help of the cunning Olga (Ana Taylor-Joy).
Naturally, bloodshed and violence is spattered throughout the film, which also see Eggers reunite with The Lighthouse star Willem Dafoe as Heimier the Fool, and Icelandic artist Björk enlisted to play a seeress. Despite the brutality of The Northman, Eggers says he has created something that is true to the what we know of the vikings and their history:
“After a fated lunch with Alexander Skarsgård, the idea of making a Viking film became real. I knew (forgive the hubris) that I needed to try and make the Viking movie,” he says. “The definitive Viking movie. With the help of the brilliant Icelandic novelist and poet, Sjón, we would embark on making the most historically accurate and grounded Viking film of all time. We would be working with archeologists and historians, trying to recreate the minutiae of the physical world, while also attempting to capture, without judgment, the inner world of the Viking mind: their beliefs, mythology, and ritual life.”
