By Sophia Nurse. Sausage Party officially hits the screens tomorrow, on August 11.
I’ll be the first to admit I wasn’t a fan of Seth Rogen in the beginning. I don’t watch porn, I’m a feminist and I shudder at phrases like ‘deep penetration’. This has made me a social pariah at times, but this wasn’t the first time this has happened and I can be pretty stubborn and individual in my opinions. However, as I got older the realities of modern sex-driven media slowly desensitized my brain – and for better or worse, my perception of things started to change and I finally understood the humour behind it all.
The first time I succumbed to becoming Seth Rogen fan was without even realising. This was after watching the science fiction comedy Paul, where on account of him being disguised as the voice of an alien, I was unable to make my previous assumptions of Rogen – Mainly that he was a nerdy Jewish guy who laughed too hard at his own jokes. As a result I finally recognised the wit, brashness and sprightliness of his humour.

Although I arrived at the screening of Sausage Party with some apprehension; mainly due to the name and the fact that the protagonist was an uncooked frankfurt, I was surprised the more I got into the film. The more I watched, the more accepting I grew to the dirty jokes, f-bombs, and sexual innuendos – mainly those pertaining to the hotdog and bun protagonists, to the point where it all became warmly familiar. It’s sort of like when your friends at school start using naughty words on a daily basis, and sooner or later you starting admiring the rebelliousness of it all.
That’s really the genius behind the whole film. Just by watching, the enjoyment of the writers, actors, and director in the making of the film becomes truly palpable. The film is filled with parody, sophomoric humour, and creative spontaneity, comprised of a plot filled with murderous humans, sexually-frustrated food products, and bath-salt-induced drug trips thrown into the mix.
What results is a hilarious film, which brings back the nostalgia of classic Pixar films like A Bug’s Life from your childhood, but with a dirty twist so for once you feel like the smug adult in the room.
