Yes, the long weekend is upon us, which means extra time to binge flicks (and also pay our respects to the ANZACs of course), so we’ve compiled a list of films from our favourite era, the ‘90s. Much like the decade that brought us Nirvana, but also Limp Bizkit, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, but is definitely entertainment-chocked.
Grab that popcorn, draw the curtains and enjoy:
One of first glimpses into the wild and glorious mind of Baz Luhrmann, following on from the Aussie director’s breakout Strictly Ballroom. Who’d of thought that anyone could make Shakespeare more brilliant…

It’s hard to believe that this film failed commercially when it was released due to its disturbing nature. Thank fuck it built such a huge cult following thanks to DVD sales, of all things…

You had me at De Niro and Pesci. Once again Scorsese brings the two together, following 1995’s Goodfellas, for an addictively tense and violent rollercoaster.

Written by Harmonie Korin, this film follows a group of teenagers as they roam the streets of New York in the mid-’90s. It’s raw and brutal and was met with mixed reviews when it came out, creating controversy over its 17+ rating in the US.

Let’s lighten the mood a bit ey? The ‘90s was a bloody great time for children/young adult films, one such was produced by a small studio called Pixar, who would go on to be valued at around $US7.4 billion.

If you haven’t watched his one in a while, you should. It’s the film that made Matt Damon and Ben Affleck the stars that they are, but more importantly gave us the phrase, “How do you like dem apples!?”

A young Ice Cube and Cuba Gooding Jr. made their name as actors in this film which was written by John Singleton whilst at film school.

One of the greatest crime/comedy/drama films of all time, you should watch Fargo purely for the accents and classic Coen Brothers dialogue. You should also check the Fargo TV series too. Season four is coming and it looks fucking brilliant.

Tarantino’s directorial (and acting) introduction into the world, ‘Dogs’ is much less talked about than Pulp Fiction but is equally as entertaining and masterfully shot. Apparently, Tarantino was going to shoot it himself with friends before Harvey Keitel saw the script and came on as Mr. White and as a co-producer, attracting funding.

Paul Thomas Anderson really made a name for himself with this film he wrote, directed and produced, that follows the story of fictional porn star Dirk Diggler and his career over the 70s and 80s.
