Once again, Wes Anderson has pulled together a cast of Hollywood royalty to dive into a new world of kitschy drama. In the trailer we see that Anderson has swapped out the cobblestones of Europe for dusty Americana full of diners, vibrant vintage clothes, and ferris wheels.
The film appears to embody all of Anderson’s signature characteristics, from its flat compositions and dry humour to its portrayal of young love. However, Asteroid City also includes a new twist: an alien invasion and Tom Hanks as one of the stars. Unlike Anderson’s previous film, The French Dispatch, which drew inspiration from French New Wave cinema, Asteroid City draws from ’50s Americana, complete with pastel colours and desert diners.
The plot follows Mitch Campbell, played by Jason Schwartzman, a widower traveling with his children when his car breaks down in the quirky town of Asteroid City. He calls his father-in-law, played by Tom Hanks, for help and befriends an actor played by Scarlett Johansson. As their relationship blossoms, they encounter an extraterrestrial being who may hold the secrets of the universe.
The cast is filled with both Anderson veterans and newcomers, including Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, and Willem Dafoe, as well as Scarlett Johansson, Bryan Cranston, and Liev Schreiber, who are appearing in a live-action Anderson film for the first time. Additionally, Margot Robbie, Hope Davis, and Steve Carell are among the newcomers.
