With the film industry gearing up to release countless titles that have been delayed as a result of COVID-19, marketing and promotional efforts are in full force, and we’re definitely getting some ingenious teasers as a result. One of the titles blessing us with that very ingenuity is the new horror flick Candyman, which serves as a sequel to the 1992 horror classic of the same name.
The trailer makes the uses of paper and puppetry, starting off by portraying recent examples of racially motivated violence and injustice before recounting the origins of the titular antagonistic character. It’s moving to say the least, showing the violence and systemic injustice taking place across the world in an hauntingly-accurate light. It’s also got some scary-af music that of course is just perfect for a horror movie (especially one co-written by Get Out director Jordan Peele). It says so much without saying anything, and definitely manages to pique interest while staying in your mind long after you’ve finished watching it.
The film is now set for a September 25 release date, after being pushed back from June 12 due to COVID-19. No doubt people will be flocking to the cinemas for this one. Check out the full trailer below.
CANDYMAN, at the intersection of white violence and black pain, is about unwilling martyrs. The people they were, the symbols we turn them into, the monsters we are told they must have been. pic.twitter.com/MEwwr8umdI
