Jonah Hill is back in his comedy bag in the trailer for Netflix’s upcoming rom-com You People, the 21 Jump Street alum starring opposite stand up legend Eddie Murphy. Helmed by newcomer Kenya Barris, the film explores culture clashes and how they specifically come about when someone marries into a family of a different ethnic background and social class than them.
It’s a pretty poignant premise, however Hill and Murphy make light of it with plenty of humour in the one-and-a-half minute teaser. Sporting a thick beard and slicked back hair, Hill spends the majority of the trailer trying to impress his girlfriend’s parents (played by Murphy and Nia Long) at dinner. It ends up being a total cringe fest on Hill’s part, with the future son-in-law making hilarious blunders like referring to Malcolm X as “The GOAT”, talking about his girlfriends sexual prowess and how mixed race people are “really awesome”.
It’s also a nice showcase of Murphy’s ability to be comedic without being, well, comedic, a dichotomy that’s in stark contrast to his performances in early classics like Beverly Hills Cop and Daddy Day Care. You People is out on Netflix on January 27th next year. Check out the full trailer below.
