And it’s as if millions of voices have cried out in pure joy (mind the New Hope reference). Seriously, it’s pretty hard to believe that 50-year-old Ewan McGregor is reprising his role of Obi-Wan Kenobi this year, his last foray as the Jedi master coming to a melancholic conclusion in 2005’s Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. But after fans peppered Disney with demands for it for years on end, we’ve finally gotten our wishes granted.
The trailer sees a slightly older Obi-Wan Kenobi living the hermit life on the desert planet of Tatooine, watching over a young Luke Skywalker as he’s hunted by the Empire. It’s a pretty gloomy premise, which McGregor embodies almost perfectly (his accent is considerably more British in this portrayal of the Jedi master however).
Thankfully, there appears to be plenty of action in the upcoming series as well, with various lightsabers being brandished throughout the 1:46 runtime (along with plenty of classic Star Wars explosions of course). The trailer concludes with another call-back to the previous films, the OG bad guy of the original trilogy Darth Vader’s breathing echoing as the screen fades to black.
It’s definitely a good time to be a Star Wars fan. Watch Ewan McGregor make his return to the franchise below.
