There are numerous fundamental building blocks to curating a good surf film. You need to be able to place the viewer right there in the wave, communicate the nature of surf culture and capture the energy so inherent to the water-based sport. It sounds easy in theory, but executing it is a whole other beast. Filmmakers Spencer Frost and Guy Williment, however, might just have pulled it off, with their film Corners of the Earth Kamchatka (featuring surfers) Letty Mortensen and Fraser Dovell one of the most high-octane love-letters to the water in recent memory.
Centred on Frost, Williment and their band of surfers as they journey to Kamchatka in far east Russia along the frozen coastline, after two years of planning. The feature goes a step beyond your usual doco, however, with it being recorded just as Russia invaded Ukraine last year. The ensuing conflict provides a heavy and hard-hitting backdrop for the homegrown Aussies, with the group finding new waves and experiences amongst international turmoil.
The spirit of optimism and the pure love of the water however is without a doubt the driving force of the trailer, with the boys shown to be repeatedly humbled by the elements while expressing a deep appreciation for the natural world. It culminates in surfer Letty emotively saying at one point, “I did not think that I’d be the first one to surf a wave, that no one has ever surfed before.” Is anyone else getting goosebumps?!
