Recently we’ve seen Ecca Vandal, Travis Barker, Italy’s MetaGirl Studio and more wearing and co-designing Vans, with the OG skate shoe company clearly cutting into every angle of the culture at the moment. Not to mention the Vans Authentic vs Pharrell saga, which certain corners of the internet are having a field day with at the moment. After all, imitation is the greatest form of flattery, right?
Anyhooooo, earlier this week they teased a collab with legendary Japanese label Undercover. In case you don’t know, the brand was founded by designer Jun Takahashi in 1990 and built its reputation in Tokyo’s underground scene by blending street fashion with art and music influences before making the leap to the luxury world. Kind of a street-to-runway story.
Included in the collection are the Classic Slip-On 98 and the Sk8-Hi, each taking a very different approach. The Classic Slip-On 98 becomes a wearable canvas, showcasing painter Emma Bennett’s celebrated works Whence You Came and Ardour across the left and right vamps. Meanwhile, the Sk8-Hi has been reimagined through Jun Takahashi’s signature gridded design language.
