You might recall back when we did a TwentyFour last year with Grace Shaw AKA Mallrat AKA Lil Mall & The Long-Range Call (maybe) that she mentioned winning a Grammy among her ambitions. Well, once again she’s talking up winning one of music’s most-coveted awards in her chilled-wave pop banger, and frankly, if she keeps it up, she may be realising her dreams sooner than she thinks.
‘Rockstar’ sees her strip things back in the verses as she chronicles a love gone bad, before lifting us way up into the clouds with a chorus whose cuteness is only matched by the bunny-laden clip. After serenading us with some ultrasmooth melodies delivered via her eversoft vocals, she slaps us with some doomish guitars in the outro that are certain to blow away any afternoon cobwebs
“I feel like ‘Rockstar’ reminds me of a mix between Lana Del Rey, Kacey Musgraves and Violent Soho,” Mallrizzle says of the track. “All through my teens (and obviously still) I loved the early Violent Soho albums self-titled and Hungry Ghost – those two albums I’ve listened to a lot and I think that’s seeped its way into the track. A lot of the songs I’ve been writing lately have been me realising my power.”
