Ponderers put down whatever refreshing beverage you may be sipping on, and take a bloody seat. Not only are the psychedelic outfit gifting us with a new song for our Thursday mornings, but with the new offering they announce their upcoming album 9 (out October 1st).
Their latest tune ‘America’s Cup’ sees them get crafty with retro bass lines and simmering guitars; singer Nick Allbrook’s searingly-nostalgic vocals gliding atop and throughout the various textures like a bullet of psychedelia. Singing about the changing nature of his hometown Fremantle, the frontman gets deep on its changing state of affairs in the verses and hooks. It all references back to a very specific moment as well, with Albrook explaining “It’s about Fremantle before Alan Bond gave the big ball of gentrification its final shove.”
The visuals see them play upon the retro nature of the tune, utilising various vibrant backdrops of hot pinks and sunset oranges as they parody the iconic New Zealand win in the Big Sail Race, with director Kristofski explaining “I’m from NZ and the Big Sail race was here. The whole country was glued to their TV’s and I don’t even wanna know how much they spent on that thing.
“I thought it would be funny if the captain of the racing team won the cup and auctioned it off to a bunch of people who love that kinda thing. Then he celebrates by dancing. Pretty twisted idea, but I think it works.”
Along with the tasty new track and video, the veteran musos have also announced a bunch of upcoming shows, hitting the east coast this June for headline gigs in Melbourne and Sydney, along with some rescheduled dates in Perth with Methyl Ethel. Whether you’ve seen them before (fellow 2019 Metro Theatre attendees where you at?) or have yet to experience them up close and personal, you’ll have an equally ridiculous and unifying time.
Pond’s new track and video for ‘America’s Cup’ is out now. You can buy/stream it here. Be sure to pre-order their upcoming album 9 here and cop tickets to their tour here.
