Simmers in your mind…

Sydney duo Royel Otis (made up of Otis Pavlovic and Royel Maddel) are back spreading good vibes and sun on their latest release, dropping their new single ‘Only One’ along with the announcement of their debut EP Campus.

The track sees the local upstarts craft an indie-firefly that burns with mid-tempo steeze, cruisy guitar lines and catchy vocals glimmering like sun rays on a lake. The track takes plenty of twists and turns as well, going from steady and resolute to quiet and gentle, woozy effects employed to propel the listener into a world beyond their own.

Speaking on the new release, the duo explain ’Only One’ was definitely the most spontaneous track on the EP. Unlike the other songs we hadn’t really prepared it before getting into the studio. We wrote it in the midst of recording and kept building on it throughout the process for some fun.

“A lot of ‘try this or try that’ was going on and I don’t think we ever really knew where we were going with it, but that’s kind of the beauty of the track, it explains its strange structure and changes.”

Along with the new single comes the announcement of Royel Otis’ debut EP Campus, which lands on September 30. The project comes after months of churning away and experimenting by the two in Royel’s Bondi sunroom, trading guitar lines over beats and going so far as embarking on road trips across the east coast; all to find the melodies that would make up Campus. As to what to expect, the boys are keeping us on our toes, Royel adding “We want to create a sound that holds the same raw, honest, evocative feeling that inspired us to pick up our instruments in the first place.”
