This is like the Avengers of local bands…

With the seemingly endless level of talent inherent to the Aussie rock scene, you’d be surprised to find out just how few collaborations there are between our local bands. Thankfully, it’s a dry spell that rising punk rock sensations, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, are seemingly breaking with their debut collaborative single and video, ‘Salt’ ft. The Grogans.

Beginning with a tender guitar line, the song quickly catapults into hard-hitting strums that just scream sombreness and reverence. Much to our delight, both Teen Jesus and The Grogans take turns in singing the verses, w with their respective vocalists Anna Ryan and Quin Grunden getting their duet on as they sing about failed relationships and constant disappointment in the absence of love.

Their harmonies make for some super satisfying moments, particularly on the hook as both Anna and Quin reach into their head voices. Anna’s singing of “Tell me something good” is on a whole other level, however, finding this unshakeable mix of vulnerability and power that propels the song beyond your standard ballad. The subsequent instrumentation and power punk layers add a momentous feeling to the record that makes you feel as if you’re witnessing the two bands perform the record to a packed stadium (although, we’re probably just having visions of what’s to come in their respective futures).

The accompanying video (directed, filmed and edited by Teen Jesus’ drummer Neve Van Boxsel) plays upon the band’s respective DIY roots, following the two outfits as they’re shown performing the record across cityscapes and suburbia. We’re also treated to some shots of the pair of the bands performing the song together, specifically around the one minute mark as it feels like we’re a fly on the wall on one of their jam sessions.

Speaking on their first ever collaboration with a band and the journey of the record, Teen Jesus explain, “During the three years we wrote this the lyrics changed so much, but I think what really pulled it all together was when we decided to have The Grogans join us on the track. It definitely shifted the energy from something so sad to something so beautiful and special” with The Grogans adding “Being a part of ‘Salt’ was pretty special… We felt that our role in this track was to add a sense of support for each other, musically and outside of the studio.”

It’s definitely a special pairing that we need a whole lot more of, particularly on Teen Jesus’ forthcoming debut album, I Love You, which lands on October 6th. Regardless, considering that they’ve just broken our hearts into literal pieces with ‘Salt’, we’re guessing whatever they serve up will be well worth the wait. Teen Jesus’ new single ‘Salt’ ft. The Grogans is out now. You can buy/stream it here. For now, check out Teen Jesus’ upcoming tour dates below.
