If you’ve been following the evolution of synthy darkwave artist Foemen AKA Brendy Cann over the past year (or longer) you’ll have noticed a prominent sci-fi narrative running through his videos. In ‘Bones’ we were introduced to his post-apocalyptic world, before ‘In a Memory’ took us into a secret meeting in a futuristic bar, and now we have the next instalment, ‘Vida By Her.’
Returning to the junkyard seen in ‘Bones’ Cann is on a mission to find Number 6 – whoever he/she/they is – and encounters an all-female gang along the way. There’s something about that sequence that feels a little like when Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) heads to the eerie Spahn Ranch in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and is met by the Manson children, with director David Fulham capturing the tension nicely.
Musically, the track is more suited to a soundtrack from James Cameron rather than Tarantino, with Cann once again combining heavily-vocoded vocals and euphoric melodies, placed sweetly over a thumping bass sequence. It seems with each release he’s adding a new layer of paint to an intoxicating and immersive artwork that we can’t help but be sucked in by.
“As usual, I like leaving lyrics ambiguous for the listener to create their own stories and worlds, I feel a song is more powerful when this is the case,” Cann says. “To me it’s about inner monologue and how we discuss life’s challenges and interaction with our conscious behaviour. This can become quite dark for some people, through mental illness as I have experienced personally but I also love the idea of always feeling small windows of hope worth fighting for.”
