Grace Shaw AKA Mallrat offers the beautifully insightful new tune ahead of her national tour.

Backed by rolling chord progression played on a piano, ‘Charlie’ is arguably the most exposed song we’ve heard from Brisbane native Mallrat’s short but impressive career so far. The song sees her touch on her parent’s fractured attempts at love, bouncing it off her own attitudes towards relationships; “Daddy worked out west and he worked so hard, my mum she smells like cigarettes and they broke each other’s heart” juxtaposes masterfully with lines like “I’m going to love you forever, I hope you warm up to me” – powerful lyricism for a still-budding artist.

Directed by Tim Hardy, the grainy accompanying video brings a lovely warmth to the track as we follow Grace rolling through suburbia on a pushbike in between colourful shots of flowers and her equine companion. It’s certainly got us keen to wrap our ears around her forthcoming EP Driving Music, which is due out September 6th (pre order here).
