Last Wednesday night we rounded up the troops and headed out to dinner, because that’s what old people do – they have a civilised sit-down meal, dash home in time to catch the results from My Kitchen Rules and then go to sleep.

On this particular occasion, we head to Butter Sydney – a restaurant with a slight hip-hop twist. Coveted sneakers sit elegantly in the front window, a steady soundtrack of Nas accompanies the nibbles, and there’s the very notable addition of the Wu-Tang Clan casually dropping by for fried chicken and Moet.

Sitting in the heart of Surry Hills and just around the corner from our favourite swag conniseurs Halfsleeve, Butter has been picking up some serious traction since opening a few weeks ago. Steady queues have formed on Friday and Saturday nights, which is okay since the staff come by with free cups of soft serve to help you avoid conversation with the people you came to eat with. It seems that the word about Butter has been spreading far and wide, because on Wednesday afternoon it was announced that Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan would be making a special appearance.

However, it wasn’t just Ghost in the building – but fellow OG members Raekwon and RZA also decided to turn up last minute, because why the hell not? The atmosphere was a little wild, with fans getting everything from artwork to vinyl autographed by the crew. One bro even brought a fresh pair of wheat Timberlands – the shoe that Wu-Tang helped cement in hip-hop culture – to be elegantly drawn on by the NYC GOATs.

There were a few ‘Size 13s’ floating around – you guessed it – 13 pieces of fried chicken served in a shoebox, smothered in your choice of hot sauce. There’s also tubs of coleslaw and fries flying onto tables like there’s no tomorrow. If you head to Butter, we also reccomend getting at least seven servings of corn, because who the hell doesn’t like corn or KoRn for that matter?

I spot RZA standing nonchalantly in the corner, wearing a pink button-up shirt and looking cool as fuck. This man has produced some of the greatest rap songs of all time. From the kung-fu samples to Eastern philosophical references, he’s also been a huge champion of Asian culture, which means a lot to a Hong Kong native like myself. At the risk of sounding like a massive fanboy, I approach RZA and tell him that I thoroughly enjoyed reading his books, before running out of things to say, getting a quick photo and hiding in a dark corner of Butter once more to cry tears of happiness.

The boys from Butter tell us that they made a second delivery of chicken to Wu-Tang just a few hours later, backstage at their show at Hordern Pavilion – so it seems like the Wu can’t get enough of Surry Hills’ latest eatery. Head down to Butter Sydney for a nice time and a watermelon slushie that’ll put you in vacation mode.
