No doubt Dana White has been more than successful in keeping the UFC alive during the COVID-19 pandemic, his plan to keep the fighting competition going first criticised and laughed at, but now proving to be very effective. So far four events have taken place since the UFC returned, and another is slated for this weekend.
However, this doesn’t do a whole lot of good for fighters outside of America, as it’s significantly hard to get into US at the moment. One of those fighters is UFC Featherweight Champ and homegrown Aussie Alexander Volkanovski, who’s understandably getting restless sitting on the sidelines.
“It’s getting frustrating,” UFC featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski, admitted. “I’m sick of sitting on the sidelines at the moment,” he said. “Watching these fights overseas; I’m ready!”
When on the topic, the highly-anticipated rematch with Max Holloway came up with Volkanovski saying “There’s no-one else,” he said. “Right now, this is the biggest fight.”
Volkanovski also mentioned the possibility of Fight Island, saying “I reckon it would have to be on Fight Island,” he said. “No-one knows where this fight island is, no-one knows 100 percent that this is going to happen, but I reckon that’s where it’s going to be. I like the idea of it, I think that sounds cool.”
If that were to happen, Volkanovski and Holloway would be the first fighters to fight there, with the MMA retreat of sorts being kept extremely under wraps by UFC president Dana White. It seems that Volkanovski is actually keen to fight without a crowd however, stating “I don’t know what it is, but no crowd just means stand and bang,” he said.
“I think that’s cool. Then, you’ve got my leg kicks; you’re going to be hearing them cracking through the arena, the world’s going to hear them. And then they’ll realise, ‘Oh shit, leg kicks do work.’ They’re going to hear these big overhand rights; I’m ready to land some big connections.”
After that killer fight between Tony Fergusson and Justin Gaethje without a crowd, we completely get what Alexander is saying. It just makes for a different experience, and helps you appreciate the technical skills of the fighters and their respective corners so much more. Safe to say we’re keen as to see the Aussie champ fight again, fingers crossed he makes it onto Fight Island sometime soon…
