Quiksilver and Kehu’s collection includes five boards, shorts, shirts, and more.

Quiksilver and Māori pro-surfer Kehu Butler have teamed up again for the second drop of TAI KEHU, a collection that highlights the connection between Māori culture and the ocean. Kehu, who grew up in Tauranga Moana, takes pride in showcasing his heritage as a kaitiaki (steward) of Māori traditions. He collaborated with tā moko artists Henare Brooking and Maia Gibbs to create designs that truly resonate with his roots.

The collection features awesome designs like Marakihau, the guardian spirit of oceans; Mangopare, which represents a hammerhead shark and symbolizes strength and courage; and Pū-Tāwhiro, a fresh take on the original Pūhoro pattern that captures the essence of surfing. Each piece is filled with Māori values and pays homage to the natural world, with Quiksilver ensuring that every detail respects Māori cultural protocols.

Kehu’s mission is to inspire Māori kids to see surfing as a big deal, just like rugby in New Zealand. He’s keeping that vision alive by partnering with Te Kōhanga Reo, the Māori immersion school he attended, to help foster cultural pride and awareness.

Reflecting on the collection, Maia says, “If you were to look at our environment through a Māori lens, you’ll understand that there is a connection happening between the surfer and the environment (taiao) and the experience of actually riding waves from an indigenous point of view.” Henare adds, “What our ancestors looked at when creating and producing these patterns and designs was our environment (taiao), like the moana and Tangaroa, with the intentions of these patterns marking our skin, adorning our waka, embodying the characteristics of the hammerhead shark (mangopare) or pūhoro to provide strength, determination, speed & power.”
