Lakers legend Kobe Bryant is set to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on the weekend, and he’s got the perfect person to induct him; none other than the king himself Michael Jordan. Since Kobe’s passing last year Jordan has publicly spoken about him numerous times, so this isn’t surprising, but still, any time MJ speaks about Kobe is cause for celebration and excitement.
In a surprise move however, Jordan spoke to Jackie MacMullan from ESPN ahead of the ceremony about the last time he spoke with Bryant before his death. It turns out the two had a conversation over text on Dec. 8, 2019, which started as a conversation about MJ’s tequila company but eventually becoming about Kobe talking about his daughter Gigi and coaching.
“This tequila is awesome,” Kobe texted, referring to Jordan’s Cincoro Tequila, a bottle of which was sent to Bryant at the launch.
“Thank you, my brother,” Jordan responded.
“Yes, sir. Family good?” Kobe replied.
“All good. Yours?”
“All good.”
Jordan smiled, then decided to have a little fun. “He was really into coaching Gigi,” MJ explains, “so I hit him up about that.”
“Happy holidays,” Jordan texted back, “and hope to catch up soon. Coach Kobe??!”
“I added that little crying/laughing emoji,” Jordan chuckles.
“Ah, back at you, man,” Kobe wrote. “Hey, coach, I’m sitting on the bench right now, and we’re blowing this team out. 45-8.”
Definitely a pretty heartwarming story that gives a cool insight into two mates, we’re definitely feeling pretty fuzzy just reading their exchanges. Hopefully we get to see more secret exchanges between the pair as time goes on. Get ready for the induction this weekend by checking out MJs speech at Kobe’s funeral last year below.
