UFC referees have to be quick on their feet, people’s careers and very lives depending on them to know when to step in and when to back off. They have a whole range of responsibilities, but you don’t often see a referee step in to help a fighter avoid a wardrobe malfunction, which is what UFC official Jason Herzog had to do recently at UFC Vegas 15.
The fight in question was Norma Dumont against Ashlee Evans-Smith, in which Dumont was on top of Evans-Smith and against the cage in the final round of he bantamweight fight. The stakes were super high, but that didn’t stop Herzog stepping in to help Dumont, specifically when her sports bra started riding up. Being an absolute legend and a half, Herzog called a quick stoppage to help Dumont readjust, to ensure she didn’t have a wardrobe malfunction in front of the whole world.
Once adjusted the fight continued, with Dumont digging deep to beat Evans Smith by unanimous decision, with all three scorecards reading 30-26 in what was her first fight since February. No doubt the win along with avoiding a wardrobe malfunction would’ve been a welcome sigh of relief, the Brazilian fighter having lost her only other fight of 2020 to Australia’s Megan Anderson earlier this year.
