What lowlifes…

Two men have been charged with stealing $100 from a disabled man who suffers from cerebral palsy while he was making an ATM cash withdrawal.

Julian Stewart, 42, was withdrawal from an ATM on George Street when 20-year-old Jarrod Elphick snatched the cash from his hands, while his 20-year-old accomplice Nathan Laidlaw kept watch.

“All of a sudden, one of them just lunged at me and grabbed the money,” Mr Stewart said. “They’re two young people, able-bodied – they should go out and get a job rather than stoop to those lows.”

Mr Stewart luckily wasn’t hurt in the incident, and was helped by witnesses soon after. The help didn’t stop there however, with the general public enraged about the incident once CCTV footage was released, with the initial appeal on the NSW Police Force Facebook Page reaching more than 100,000 people and garnering thousands of shares and comments.

Stewart said he was overwhelmed with the level of public support, saying “Australian people, I’ve said this before, they’re the best people in the world. I didn’t think I had many friends but it looks like I’ve got the whole of Australia.”

Both thieves were arrested soon after at Green Valley and Liverpool police station, being charged with stealing from a person.

Detective Inspector David El-Badawi described the pair as “low-life grubs. They saw Julian and they took the opportunity.” But Stewart doesn’t hold any bad blood with the two men, saying “They’ve realised that they did do the wrong thing and I’m proud of them for doing that.”

Stewart has said that he would donate any money from well-wishers to charity. Sounds like a top bloke if you ask me…
