The protests in the US over the treatment of African Americans by police peaked over the weekend and are showing no signs of slowing down. It continues following the murder of George Floyd on May 25th in Minnesota and has prompted worldwide outrage, including in Australia where we have been forced to look inwards at indigenous deaths in custody and address our own shortcomings when it comes to racism and police.
Members of Solidarity In Surf – a movement that was created by Black Girls Surf, an American Not-For-Profit teaching surfing and empowering young girls and women of the African diaspora – hit the coast on Saturday in Anglesea, Coolangatta, Bondi, Ulladulla and Gippsland to stand against systemic racism and share stories about their struggles, calling in unison for change.
Above are photos from the paddleouts that saw thousands of people offer their voice and board in solidarity.
