La Nina Storm is definitely decimating all in its path, bringing with it 5 metre waves and dangerous flooding and winds. Its most recent victim is that of Main Beach in Byron, a super popular tourist beach that everyone’s been to at one point or another.
It seems that even with the intense level of prep undertaken for the storm, there was no stopping it, with sandbags and tarped roofs doing little to stop the devastation brought about by the intense weather conditions. Full props to the SES volunteers from the Yamba and Maclean Unit however, who have been absolute guns and been rescuing drivers stuck in floodwaters and clearing trees as they battle the devastation.
The Bureau of Meteorology has pointed to Monday (today) being a “critical time” for NSW, with the weather trough moving further south and saturated rivers set to rise even further.
BOM meteorologist Jonathan How has described the storm as “the most significant rainfall event since February and floods will pose a risk to many people.” That sounds totally legit, with three day totals of 300-600 ml are predicted to fall across the entirety of the region by tomorrow.
NSW SES media officer Ilana Pender-Rose has also warned of a second storm system, with gusts of up to 90km/h expected over the next day or two around Ballina. As a result of the harsh winds, sea waves of up to five metres high are more likely to occur, thus people are being asked to “please never drive, walk or ride through flood water.”
That goes for surfers too (who have already been seen surfing the wild conditions in Coffs Harbour and Kirra) don’t get any funny ideas you loose cannons.
⚠️ VERY HEAVY RAINFALL has been observed in the Tweed and Brunswick river valleys, with rapid creek rises occurring. Highest rainfall totals since 9am Saturday are 393mm at Couchy Creek, 370mm at Numinbah. Refer to Severe Weather Warning and Flood Warnings https://t.co/ULRO2bmm7X pic.twitter.com/Fq5r5EHZYy
