Between intergalactic space tourism and now amphibious vehicles, the future is here…

A British tech startup has revealed what is the world’s first luxury amphibious vehicle, with the ability to travel on both land and water. The ‘Arosa’ hovercraft, which was designed by automobile company Von Mercier, can reach top speeds of nearly 100kms/hr, and floats on a cushion of air some 17cm above the surface.

Going for around $100,000, the Arosa prototype is one of 50 built by Von Mercier so far, with the innovation firm intending to sell its fleet to the general public by the middle of the year. Unlike previous hovercraft attempts, the Arosa claims to have enhanced manoeuvrability, allowing drivers to reverse, park and travel atop various terrains at speeds not yet seen in similar vehicles.

Some 180 would-be Marty McFly’s have expressed interest in purchasing the Arosa, but drivers might be restricted by the vehicle’s classification as a boat, which currently prohibits on-land use of the hovercraft in the UK. Speaking of its new product, Von Mercier touted the Arosa’s world-first status:

“VonMercier blends cutting-edge hovercraft and electric vehicle innovation with luxury, high-performance technology…It does this by traveling on a cushion of air and essentially flying right above the surface.”

If you’re interested in getting your hands on the hovercraft, and willing to fork out the $1,000 deposit, head to Von Mercier’s reservation website here.
