In what’s sure to be the biggest flex Australia will get all year, a recent United Nations report on drug use has found that we’ve earned the prestigious title of being the most dedicated consumers of cocaine and ecstasy on the planet.
While some might wonder how on Earth we got so high (no pun intended), cocaine and ecstasy (MDMA) usage Down Under has been at an all-time high for quite some time. Not only are we rocking the charts for cocaine consumption, but we’re also reigning supreme as the global ecstasy epicenter. To top things off, cannabis use was “Significantly higher than the global average”, with a “relatively high” use among high school students.
Thankfully, however, the report has found that the prevalence of methamphetamine use in the general population of Australia has fallen. However, amongst those who, for some reason, still use it, consumption of it has become more intense, which is straight up terrifying considering how bad of a drug it is (all drugs are bad, but you know what I mean).
Speaking in response to the wild drug frenzy gripping the globe, Ghada Waly, the executive director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), said, “We are witnessing a continued rise in the number of people suffering from drug use disorders worldwide, while treatment is failing to reach all of those who need it.”
In all seriousness, it is pretty wild that Australia has snorted/ingested/smoked its way to the drug usage charts. Regardless, be sure to stay safe out there folks. And if you’re interested, check out the full report here.
