And now for something a little different in this edition of Frames, where our Melbourne shooter Chelsea Dennison collects some of the images she shot while volunteering for an NGO in Colombia & her travels throughout Cuba.
Here, Chelsea captures the unmistakable spirit and energy of this fine land and its most fascinating inhabitants, both young and old. It’s a visual insight into a completely different world than most of us are used to, and has us itching to go and explore even more of South America’s beautiful terrain.
Speaking on the experience, Chelsea says:
“I lived with an amazing Colombian family that spoke hardly any English and as I spoke hardly any Spanish it was such an interesting few weeks. Even with our communication barriers we still all became great friends and I really want to go back and visit one day soon!”

A farmer and his produce at the Sogamoso markets. I really enjoyed walking around the markets with my camera, people loved getting their photo taken. I think I like this image especially because of the contrast between his hard working hands and his wish to look respectable by wearing a suit.

This image is one that definitely stands out to people. It was taken on my last day in Havana, there was some flash floods but that didn’t stop the locals from their soccer game. I stood watching for so long that this young boy became used to me watching, after this photo I gave him my jumper to try and warm up. It was just so fascinating to watch them play, just like in a street game in Australia they moved the goals (two chairs and a plank) every time the cars drove through, but unlike in Australia most the boys played in bare feet, while some had only one shoe which was shared amongst the players. One of my dreams is to go back to Havana and have an exhibition on a wall in the streets, and try to get word to the subjects so I can then give them these images.
Walking the streets of Havana, everything has a story. The country’s history is plastered anywhere it can be including in this office front.
This photo makes me happy. Two friends carrying a broken mirror through the city centre of Havana. That wouldn’t happen in Australia, if something is broken here people throw it out. The people of Cuba don’t throw anything out, ever. Everything can be fixed and everything can serve another purpose because it has to.
