The story of Shrapnel could be a movie…

Basically, an asteroid has hit the moon, creating Saturn-like rings around it. These rings collide with Earth, leaving a 500km-wide band known as the ‘Sacrifice Zone’ or ‘The Zone’. Precious materials AKA shrapnel is found within The Zone, leaving the region ripe for ambitious mercenaries to loot and plunder.

Thanks to science (yew!), refined shrapnel allows behaviours that occur in quantum mechanics to manifest into the realm of classical physics, meaning that objects can become physically linked, birthing weapons and tools that can be used in reality bending ways. Players battle it out in mercenary extraction teams risking what they’ve acquired (in NFT form) in battle for the chance to acquire more and build their arsenal.

With empowering creators at the forefront of the FPS game, Shrapnel will allow anybody to quickly get started creating and customizing their own Shrapnel content from weapons and skins to maps and more. By minting items, XP, and avatars, players can ensure transparent verification and traceability of their items, increasing trust in the process of exchange and providing a way for players and creators to be rewarded for user generated content. Players will have access to inventory held on a digital wallet, Shrapnel will enable players to safely store and fairly trade their in-game items.

The team behind the game couldn’t be more impressive. Spun out from HBO Interactive – they’ve enjoyed past successes with some of the world’s leading game companies including Xbox, Electronic Arts, HBO, LucasFilm, Irrational, and Zombie Ent, as well as working on titles such as Halo, Call of Duty, and Star Wars, among others.

The credits for the trailer, built on Epic Games‘ Unreal Engine 5, the world’s most advanced real-time 3D creation tool, read more like something out of a Hollywood film than a video game. It was was written by Shrapnel’s CEO Mark Long, and directed by gaming legend Jerry O’Flaherty (Gears of War), with music by BAFTA award-winning composer Jesper Kyd, and sound by the Oscar-nominated sound producer Alan Rankin.
