The Russian collective have spearheaded financial support for UkraineDAO

Russian rock band Pussy Riot have teamed up with multiple cryptocurrency groups to launch a Ukrainian aid NFT. Titled UkraineDAO, the newly-minted token will be sold this weekend with the release of a 1/1 NFT of the Ukrainian flag, the proceeds from which will go directly towards humanitarian efforts in the wake of the Russian invasion.

Offering financial support to the Ukrainian organization Come Back Alive, the Pussy Riot-assisted project also allows people to contribute any amount, with those donors receiving a digital souvenir for their contribution. The news comes after reports that Come Back Alive had received some $400,000 in Bitcoin in the 12 hours after Ukraine’s invasion, with Pussy Riot’s co-founder Nadya Tolokonnikova speaking praise of crypto’s aid during the unfolding crisis.

“Our goal is to use what we’re good at, web3, to assist Ukrainians as they cope with the Russian invasion of their country,” the musical group Tweeted last week. “We’ll be buying an NFT of the Ukrainian flag.” Speaking of the group’s decision to omit any of their own work, Tolokonnikova said “it’s about something much bigger than all of us, it’s a pure gesture of solidarity. The Ukrainian flag unites us.”

An ideal mode of currency in times of crisis, Tolokonnikova also commented on the ease and swiftness of crypto in offering “borderless, permitless” financial support to a country currently under martial law. The auction ends in a little over two days, with the highest bid currently sitting at 1,102.5 ETH ($2,940,856).
