Hailing from Washington DC – shouts to Minor Threat – Jonathan began shooting when he was 14 years old, documenting live shows and his mates’ bands. Since then, he’s moved to Los Angeles and evolved into more of a portrait photographer, with his work being turned into album art and magazine covers. His Frames feature below sees some of the huge artists he’s worked with thus far – including everyone from Green Day to Thursday to Steve Aoki. Cool story: Mr. Aoki has a Gorilla Biscuits tattoo!
Of course, working with bands of this calibre is always a little unpredictable, as Jonathan explains:
“There is such a challenge in shooting personalities that comes with never being able to truly plan for what is going to happen. I am quite OCD and a control freak, so I love the combination of being able to control my environment while always having to adapt to whatever happens and collaborate with my subjects on the spot to create something unique and in the moment.”
See some of the amazing artists that Jonathan has shot below along with the accompanying stories, while you can also see more of his impressive shots over on Instagram. We’ve got Dookie on repeat for the rest of the day:
Green Day: Working with these guys is fantastic. They are so pro, all you have to worry about is making sure you are ready to go when they arrive and they will create something great.
Rivers Cuomo of Weezer: I can never get a read on Rivers. I’ve worked with him a few times now and everytime talking it’s like a blank slate, you can never tell what he’s thinking. Once he gets infront of the camera he just turns on, its awesome.
All Time Low: I’m a big advocate for ‘in camera’. We built a bed in the studio and individually layed each band member in their spot while dressing the set with sheets and pillows. Fun fact, Jack did not wear pants under the covers.
The Wu-Tang Clan: Trying to photograph all nine members of the Wu-Tang Clan is no easy task. Add in the fact that we did in in a 15×15 conference room inside of Warner Brothers, with an entourage of about 30 people behind me, it was pure chaos. Rza told me ‘It’s all about the chi.’
Moby & Wayne Coyne: Rolling Stone sent me to spend a day with Moby and Wayne Coyne walking around downtown LA in mariachi suits with a gimp. It was the best.
Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco: We were searching for some sort of prop in the studio, opened a drawer and found this deck of cards. We got this shot on the second try.
Steve Aoki: Each year at SXSW I do a portrait studio for Vans in a tiny 12×12 room. Aoki grabbed a board from one of the kids working in the house our studio was and started doing tricks off a box I had setup. There was a chandelier right over his head and lights on every side of him, it was dangerous and awesome.
Sabi: I was tasked to shoot the single art for Sabi’s song on a video shoot. We had a five minute window to get this done in the middle of a house party. I had 2 PAs holding people back from falling on me or into the shot. You can see Tyga’s leg in the bottom right of the frame.
Tyson Ritter of the All American Rejects: Sometimes there is beauty in mistakes that cannot be recreated. As Tyson was dancing in the studio, I shot too quickly for all of my lights to fire. The result was unplanned and organic.
Thursday: Tom called me with the idea of having floating paper lanterns for their press photo, I loved it. These guys helped me out to no end when I was starting out, they were like my big brothers. I was stoked to get to do what turned out to be their last press photos before breaking up.
Thrice: We shot this at 8am in September. The water was cold, they were troopers. I laid on my back and raised my camera as high as I could each time shore pound hit me while my assistants handheld lights.
Dave Vanian of The Damned: At my portrait studio for Vans at SXSW, I was waiting for The Damned to show up. I try to be ready for anything as a lot of times personalities have very limited time and/or attention spans. I have to be ready to get what I want in five minutes or less. Dave walked into the room carrying this throne he found in the hallway and asked if we could use it. It was perfect.
