If you follow LWA, you’ll know we’re pretty into Fan Girl. Over the past six or so months we’ve featured a few of the singles from their brand new real or staged EP and have been absolutely enthralled by their dark take on indie rock (not to mention their DIY vids)… Over the EP’s five tracks the Naarm outfit demonstrate a few key things that have been really hooking us in:
Firstly, they’re difficult to put in a box. Each track sounds a little different from the last genre-wise, as they’re clearly not afraid to explore their sound and follow wherever the melodies take them, That said, the EP does feel like a connected body of work – this is no easy task.
Secondly – and I can think of no way to say this without sounding like a judge on Australian Idol or whatever the modern-day equivalent is – the vocals fucking kill. Frontman Noah Harris has a spicy edge to his voice that, when given the right backing, really slices through.
The band are about to play a run of shows across the UK, and we have no doubt that the poms will be frothing hard on this Aussie outfit. A little while back, we asked them about the vinyl that turns them on… this is what they said:
Björk – Homogenic (Vince)
This record will just never stop being fucking incredible. Perfect tour record for any setting, all seasons, any levels of emotional fragility. Sounds as good on takeoff as it does at a truck stop on the Hume. Everything feels like a movie when Björk is on.
Wu-Lu – Loggerhead (Vince)
Loggerhead is a melting pot of so much of my favourite music. Murky like ‘Theres A Riot Goin On’, propulsive like Nia Archives’ ‘Silence Is Loud’, intricate like ‘In Rainbows’, but loose like FWF’s ‘Serfs Up’. I could sit in this album for days.
Joan As Policewoman + Tony Allen + Dave Okumu – The Solution Is Restless (Vince)
Legitimately the hardest posse cut since ATCQ’s last record. Just pure collaborative gold. One of those records I wish I was in the room for. RIP Tony.
Charlie Mingus – The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady (Vince)
This will sound weird but I don’t think I’ve referenced a record in the studio over the last couple years as much as this one. One of the greatest records to ever be put to tape. Chaos and control fighting for centre stage.
Wilco – Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (Noah)
Almost a perfect record (someone please burn ‘heavy metal drummer’). There’s so many heart stabbing catchy songs packed into it. Over the years as a band we often referenced Yankee Fox Trot as inspiration when we are songwriting. The way in which the songs are arranged and almost deconstructed on this record is so curious. It is often on high rotation at the tail end of a long drive on tour when the games of 21 questions have led to a tiff between Luke and I. It contemplatively cools us down.
SZA – Ctrl (Noah)
This is one of the first records that me and my partner bonded over. So it has a lot of sentimental value. The fourth track ‘Drew Barrymore’ might be one of my favourite songs of all time. Thematically, it’s such an honest, and at times, hilariously unglamorous peek into what navigating yourself and relationships is like in your 20s. The vocal performance and production on this whole record is on a whole other level. I love the timbre of her voice.
Oasis – (What’s the Story) Morning Glory (Noah)
It would feel wrong not to not bring up an Oasis record during the current social climate, wouldn’t it? And Oasis are a very important band to us. Morning Glory has some of my favourite oasis songs of all time on it (and then there’s some other ones). It’s the town crier and the poet at their best. Marlin’s Dreaming – Quotidian (Luke)
This album really hit me at the right time and quickly became one of my favourite albums ever! I love how the album flows from start to finish and how each song has its own vibe and texture, yet all existing in the same world. My favourite songs are ‘Sink or Swim’ and ‘Moth Eyes’! Their new album, ‘Hirl’, is also fantastic!
Sudan Archives – Natural Brown Prom Queen (Luke)
This album undeniably slaps… song after song… it’s totally captivating the whole way through! I love the mix of big subby synths clashing against strings and crazy vocal production. I also love the balance between hard-hitting songs like ‘OMG BRITT’ and the more gradual slow burns like ‘ChevyS10’. This is a desert island kind of record!
These New South Whales – TNSW (Luke)
I get so hyped up listening to this record! The whole album feels so immediate and packed full of energy. Every time I listen to the album in full, I come away with a different favourite song, so it continues to grow and change on me which keeps it fresh.
Bakers Eddy – Love Boredom Bicycles (Luke)
This is one of my all-time favourite records. It’s so, so, so damn catchy! I love the energy and character that bursts out of this record, it really oozes charisma that makes it gripping the entire way through. I don’t even want to think about the number of times I’ve listened to ‘Peripheral Vision’, it’s truly one of my favourite songs. Thank you, Bakers!!!
