With AI continuing to reach Terminator-level sophistication each and every day, the future of computing has never looked so… scary. Understandably, virtual reality has emerged alongside AI in recent years as the next big frontier, with the possibility of computer-generated environments becoming more and more possible. Now, Apple has jumped on the VR bandwagon by announcing its debut headset, but surprisingly, it’s actually kind of underwhelming.
Unveiling the Apple Vision Pro virtual reality headset at a recent conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook walked viewers through the headset. Coming with an all new operating system called the VisionOS, the headset is controlled by the user’s hands, voice and eyes. You can also connect your Mac to use within the artificial world, which would literally be like Inception for VR. To top it off, the headset boasts 4K displays, infrared cameras, LED illuminators, and Apple’s powerful M2 chip, along with a new R1 chip designed specifically for mixed reality.
It sounds like a whole lot of crazy hardware, but when you look at the headset itself and its performance, it seems totally unnecessary, especially considering the fact that it costs a hefty $3,500 USD ($5,000 AUD). Of course, this is just the early days of VR and with the massive leaps in advancement the technological world is making every day, we’re guessing the headset will be reduced to literal contact-size within mere years.
