Following nearly five years away from the big screen to pursue his love of auto racing, Steve Jobs alum Michael Fassbender has returned to Hollywood for the new Netflix epic, The Killer. Helmed by director, David Fincher, the film centres on a troubled assassin whose life goes into freefall following a near-death encounter (you’d think a hired gun would be used to those sorts of brushes with death at this point). Naturally, after the close call, old mate goes on a globe-trotting rampage to get even with his former employers and find safety amongst the storm.
Beginning with Fassbender walking down the street in a totally conspicuous get up (a while baller hat with a matching jacket and pants, really?), the scene quickly shifts from small town living to sniper assassinations, high speed chases and other standard assassin activities, all while Fassbender narrates in his best American accent to “Stick to the plan”. We’re not kidding, he says it so much throughout the minute-and-a-half teaser that if you were to make a drinking game out of it, you’d probably be plastered quicker than the bar shootout in Inglourious Basterds.
We’re then shown a bunch of the other heavy hitters in the action flick, with the trailer quickly flashing upon actors Charles Parnell, Tilda Swinton, Arliss Howard, Sophie Charlotte and more. The trailer ultimately culminates with a quick succession of additional action sequences (with one of including a sniffer dog that looks exactly like the one that totally ruined my Laneway 2019) as Fassbender recites what sounds like the dos and dont’s of ‘Professional Killing 101’.
It’s hard not to make draw comparisons to the classic shooter style of film that’s become impossible to avoid in Netflix and Hollywood as a whole these days (Extraction, John Wick, Jack Ryan to name a few). However, considering that visionary director Fincher is in the director’s seat for this one (House of Cards, Se7en, Fight Club), we’re definitely expecting an added gravitas and style that you just wouldn’t be able to find in any other film centred on a blood thirsty assassin.
