With humble beginnings on the American West Coast, Vans was an early favourite for skaters, surfers and punk rockers. Soon enough, the waffle sole began working its way to catwalks and Hollywood sets, favoured by fashionistas which saw the modest silhouette morphed and changed into more iterations made of more materials than we can count.
The Vans story is special because the brand has never lost sight of its DIY roots. Even after 50 years, they continue to support community events in sports, music and the arts, and are even throwing 10 birthday parties across the world with the likes of The Wu-Tang Clan, Erykah Badu, Nas, Jamie XX and more. And while Vans is celebrating its history, they’re also looking towards the future – unveiling a new Vans Pro Classics Anniversary Collection which modifies their classic silhouettes with sockliners and underlays for improved cushioning and comfort.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary, Vans have unveiled The Story of Vans campaign, which outlines their history with neat animation and commentary from some of their long-time supporters. On voiceover duties we have skater Jeff Grosso, actress Chloë Savigny and the unmistakable delivery of Public Enemy legend and rap immortal Chuck D – making for three different videos and perspectives on the legacy of Vans.
