Brace Yourselves: Instagram Is Introducing A Non-Chronological Feed

One of the biggest joys in life is waking up at midday, lying in bed and scrolling through Instagram to see all of last night’s shenanigans while drinking a Gatorade. However, that cherished pastime is now in jeopardy, with Instagram announcing on a blog post that it will soon introduce non-chronological feeds.

Basically, this means that your posts in your feed won’t appear in the order that they’ve been uploaded, but rather Instagram will automatically sort them “based on the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting and the timeliness of the post. As we begin, we’re focusing on optimising the order — all the posts will still be there, just in a different order.” Apparently, current users miss 70% of pics and videos on their feeds anyway, so Instagram is making the changes to ensure that you only see the most crucial content.

So, if your soulmate happens to live on the other side of the world and you’re scared about missing one of their seflies while you’re at a family dinner, it’s likely that it’ll appear right at the beginning of your feed, front and centre when you have a chance to check your phone. Instagram also assures us that “when your best friend posts a photo of her new puppy, you won’t miss it.” That’s a huge weight off my shoulders, because all I ever want to see on Instagram is photos of puppies and Alexis Ren.

There’s no doubt that there’s going to be some backlash to Instagram’s new feed concept, but we’ll have to wait and see how it’s integrated into the App’s current form and how it will prioritise relevant content for its users. Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for Instagram to introduce a Top 8 so that we can be assholes and rank our friends in order of importance.
