The images foresee an Australian cityscape strikingly similar to life on Mars…

New images produced through artificial intelligence have envisioned what Australia will look like some 50 years into the future. The visual predictions were shared via Reddit last week, with one user employing the AI generator Midjourney to foresee Australia’s city skyline in the year 2070. The resulting images depict a civilisation that has moved inland, characterised by futuristic skyscrapers in desert-like landscapes.

This forecast of an arid cityscape, reminiscent of Mars, aligns with findings from the National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service, which found that Australia is home to the same rocky compounds also found on the Red Planet. The predictions also reflect the effects of climate change, rendering the images an eerie combination of high-tech futurism and dystopia.

The move away from the coasts also reflects current trends, as scientists have predicted that societies will be forced to travel either inland or poleward if the climate continues on its current trajectory. For Redditors, however, the AI predictions don’t seem to be too much of a stretch, with many users pointing out the images’ similarity to the landscapes of Western Australia.
