If you’ve ever indulged in a cheeky Denzel Frothington at your local, odds are you’ve been under-poured at one time another. We’re not attacking the good nature of the Aussie pub community here, but let’s face it, we’ve all had it happen to us at one point or another. Usually, it’s as simple as asking for it to be topped off while making some slightly awkward banter with the bartender, but now, a hefty $220,000 fine could take the place of those all-too familiar interactions.
Starting yesterday, undercover staff from a government department named the National Measurement Institute (we’re not making this up) are slyly attending some Aussie pubs for one week while in plain clothes, to double check whether bartenders are indeed pouring correctly. You could be enjoying a nice beer right now and be sitting right next to one of them (and if you yourself are one of them, carry on).
Speaking on the new initiative, Minister for Science and Technology Melissa Price explained, “It’s important that consumers are getting what they have paid for. For many businesses, it’s been a tough couple of years. Where businesses are re-establishing after long lockdownsor natural disasters, audits will give assurance that their instruments are still compliant.”
Not gonna lie, as annoying as getting under-poured at the pub is, we guarantee there are plenty more things and people far more deserving of a $220,000 fine (looking at you Scott). Now, for any bartenders out there that are wanting to brush up on their schooner-pouring skills, we recommend taking tips from Christoph Waltz in Django Unchained below.
