Central to Create + Explore 005 is a series of images shot by Borrello between Western Australia and Indonesia in 2014, images that Borello says “aim to draw focus on a transition from urban sprawl into nature, and express the sense of isolation one can experience, no matter the location.” The viewer is taken through a rapid-fire, time-lapse style series of aerial shots of Perth’s motorways, as a chill, ambient beat from Loston gently crescendos. Borello’s grand panoramas reveal Perth City in a striking new light, capturing its inhabitants on their daily grind, moving through the CBD’s streets and driving its roads; as his imagery transitions from morning to night we experience the full arc of daily Perth city life.
A dark, haunting vocal then transitions us into an Indonesian mountainscape, the swirling plumes of morning mist the perfect visual encapsualation of the trap tones swelling in the score. There’s a sincerity encoded in the work that culminates in the creation of a strong sense of place and awe for the viewer; who, taken to the furthest top of the mountain, is very much alone, removed from human touch; the music as chilly as the imagery’s atmospheres.
