Regardless of the absolute shitstorm of 2020 and the economic clusterfuck it came hand in hand with, it seems billionaires and the societal elite among us had a year like no other. A year defined by exploding cryptocurrencies, instant public offerings and stock prices that soared so high they cast a shadow over Everest. Consequently, the amount of billionaires on Forbes’ list this year reached a whopping 2,755 people (660 more than last year) with a staggering 86% of the billionaires on this year’s list richer than they were a year ago (not mad at all).
Unsurprisingly, Amazon head Jeff Bezos topped the list for the fourth year in a row, clocking a crazy net worth of $177 billion USD ($231 billion AUD), while our boy Elon Musk soared like a SpaceX rocket into second place with $151 billion ($197 billion AUD). Microsoft founder Bill Gates wasn’t far behind, scoring fourth place on the list with $124 billion ($162 billion AUD). As if to balance Gates’ morality with some straight up shittiness however, Facebook mastermind Mark Zuckerberg rolled in behind him with $97 billion ($127 billion AUD), with Warren Buffet below him with $96 billion ($125 billion AUD).
Representing for the Aussies we had mining queen Gina Rineheart clocking in at 70th (the highest Aussie on the list) with $23.6 billion ($31 billion AUD), beating her daughters Bianca and Ginia, who both tied for 1833rd at $1.7 billion ($2.2 billion AUD). Gretel Packer (daughter of Kerry Packer) was up there too, repping the Aussie casinos at 1362nd place at $2.3 billion ($3 billion AUD).
And finally, we gotta include some of our favourite celebs and athletes, and who better to start off with than the GOAT Michael Jordan, who ranked at 1931st on the list with a net worth of $1.6 billion ($2 billion AUD), a saucy two hundred million (basically pocket change to the folks on this list) behind Kanye West himself, who scored 1750th with $1.8 billion ($2.3 billion AUD).
But in an update that we definitely weren’t expecting, Yeezy’s soon to be ex-wife and reality queen Kim Kardashian has quietly become a billionaire without us realising, clocking just over the hallowed number and scoring a rank of 2674th. Interestingly, little sister Kylie doesn’t seem to be on the list, which will no doubt be an issue of debate on an upcoming KUWTK episode…
